History of The Sun-Folk Society

The Sun-Folk Society is a naturist club based in Hertfordshire. It was founded in 1931 and was one of the first Societies with membership open to the public to practice complete nudity. They first used a small site in North London and then rented a small part of Spielplatz.

On 1st December 1931, a 5-acre site adjacent to Spielplatz became available and with funds provided by the Committee out of their personal money the site at “The Spinney”, near St. Albans, Hertfordshire was purchased. The ownership of the free-hold land was vested in the Trustees who hold it on behalf of the Society.

In its first year, 60 members enrolled at Sun-Folk – two years later, the membership stood at 250, thanks largely to the publicity and articles in the magazine “Gymnos”. These articles did much at the time to further the cause of British naturism.

The Present – The Sun-Folk Society

The Sun-Folk Society owns 5 acres of woodland and over the years, this has become the centre for a range of naturist activities which the members have created for themselves turning part of the woodland into a recreational haven.

Sun-Folks’ members are drawn from all walks of life, from all age groups and from over a large area. The membership comprises of couples, families and single people.

Apart from relaxing, the members voluntarily undertake a variety of maintenance and building work, for example, our new toilet block has been built and fitted out by members. In this way, the Club enjoys the expertise from members in many professions and trades and is also able to keep its costs down and the subscription to a reasonable level. A variety of “work experience” is always available, each member doing what he or she is best able to do and all efforts are appreciated! In addition, there are occasional social events and sports such as miniten and volleyball are popular.

The Future – British Naturism: Sunfolk

On 13 March, 2020, British Naturism acquired the land and property of the Sun-Folk Society to secure the future of naturism in the years ahead. The property will be known as “British Naturism: Sunfolk”. Former members of the Sun-Folk Society will continue to be able to enjoy the site, as will wider British Naturism members.
