How Nude Beaches Work

Beaches, for many sand-loving humans, are glorious paradises. Ideal areas to sunbathe, swim, play volleyball or simply hang out – and in some places, let it all hang out. We’re referring, of course, to nude beaches.

Nude beaches are exactly what you think. They’re places where people congregate for typical recreational beach activities, but instead of covering up with bathing suits and towels, everything is on full display.

Let’s settle one critical point straight right away — nude beaches aren’t typically a pornographic hodgepodge of hedonism or voyeurism. They are, quite simply, a lot like regular beaches, only some people are naked instead of clothed. Cont…Read full original article…

‘Sex pests’ spark calls for nude beach relocation at Byron Bay

Byron Bay is renowned as a global destination for free-spirited tourists, but locals say a clothing-optional beach to the town’s north is attracting sexual predators.

Colleen Graham lives at Tyagarah, just off the Pacific Highway in northern New South Wales, and said she could no longer walk through the local nature reserve or along the beach without being confronted or harassed.

“I’ve had a range of encounters. The most common one is lying on my towel reading a book and a naked man moving his towel very close to me and masturbating,” she said. Cont…Read full original article…

12 Progressively bold things to do naked
Being naked feels great, doesn’t it? It’s the way we came into the world, and it’s the way nature intended us to be.

The feel of the sun, wind and water against our bare bodies is so natural and freeing.

The ancient Greeks knew this and celebrated the naked human form, especially when it came to sports and competition. In fact, the word gymnasium comes from the Greek word “gymos,” which literally means naked.

The original Olympic games featured nude athletes running, wrestling, and boxing. In Sparta, even the female athletes competed naked, much to the enjoyment of the Spartan boys who were allowed to watch.

We also know that ancient cultures in Egypt, India, and the Orient practiced nudism. And many remote tribes in Africa and South America wear little to no clothing even to this day.

Why did we start wearing clothes? Cont…Read full original article…

‘It is such a liberating experience’: Naturists get real about life in the raw
A naturist lifestyle is about much more than getting your gear off.

When executive Stuart Whelan first decided to visit a nudist beach, he didn’t tell his wife. But she had suspicions he’d been up to something.

Stuart Whelan and his wife left their corporate life in Sydney to own and operate a naturist retreat in Nelsons Bay.

“When I got home she looked at me and said ‘Where have you been? You’re just beaming’”, he says. “I’d always planned to tell her, and she said ‘Wow … I’ve got to have some of that.’”

Thus began a journey that led Whelan, in his early 50s at the time, and his wife, from their corporate life in Sydney to owning and operating a naturist retreat in Nelsons Bay. For Whelan, getting naked in nature was “transformational”. Cont…Read full original article…

Nude awakenings: the misunderstood world of naturism

Andrew Welch would like to make it clear he has never had an orgy, thank you very much. Nor has he ever cavorted, prepared to cavort or even thought about cavorting. He is not a pervert, he is not corrupting your children, and he is not – for the love of God – ‘offending’ you. Andrew Welch is just a naturist, like millions of other people, and he’d love for you to join him some time.

Naturists being naturists, not a mass suicide

“The British public tend to have this absurd stigma about it,” Welch says, with a touch of exasperation. “It’s about nakedness in general. They think there’s something immodest or unnatural about it, that by being naturists we’re doing something illicit. It’s so far from the truth that it’s laughable, it really is.”

Welch has been Commercial Manager for British Naturism (BN) – the national organisation for social nudists – for over a decade, joining a small and committed staff of part-timers at the Northampton-based non-profit.

It’s his job to change minds and address the reputation surrounding a pursuit many dismiss as distinctly odd, conducted at best by elderly eccentrics with an unnerving love of volleyball, or at worst by sex-crazed elderly eccentrics with an unnerving love of volleyball. In reality, they barely even play volleyball. Cont…Read full original article…

Tourism Minister: Bulgaria has no national law regarding nudism

Bulgaria has no national legal regulation on the practice of nudism, Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova told the National Assembly during Question Time on September 8.

Angelkova was answering a question about the continuing dispute between the concession-holders and naturists at Delfin (“Dolphin”) Beach on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast.

There was no explicit prohibition or sanctions regarding nudism, “there is no explicit order as to how visitors can use beaches, in terms of their appearance,” she told Parliment. Cont…Read full original article…

Playas nudistas en Santander
[Subhead]

The North Side of Naked Mallorca

After a few edgy opinion pieces, I thought it might be time to get back to documenting our naturist travels, leading out with a few words and pictures of our naked explorations on the north side of Mallorca.

Canova Beach
Canova Beach

This was our second visit to Mallorca, and likewise, our second stay at Skinny Dippers Naturist Retreat; an idyllic little haven just a few minutes drive from the famous naturist beach, Es Trenc. During our first stay about a year ago, we were so mesmerized by the place that we scarcely left the side of the pool, lacking neither the energy nor motivation to get dressed and explore.

This time, however, we decided we should see a bit more of the island, one day setting off on a train excursion from Palma to a little German enclave on the eastern shores of Mallorca, then another day driving directly north to check out a couple other renowned naturist beaches on the island. The Naked Truth About German Nudists

A FEW YEARS AGO, a black-and-white photograph emerged of three young women walking along a dock with an expanse of sparkling water behind them. All were smiling and were naked, and soon after the picture appeared online, gleeful commenters across the web began insisting that the woman on the left was Angela Merkel. The German chancellor’s office declined to comment, and while many now believe the photograph’s association with Merkel to be a hoax, there’s plenty of reason to think that Merkel, who grew up in a small East German town north of Berlin, came of age frolicking in the nude.

Germany’s millions of nudists, like those shown here, tend to be older, plump and proud.
Germany’s millions of nudists, like those shown here, tend to be older, plump and proud. Roshan Adhihetty

It would hardly count as conspiracy theory. Public nakedness is common in the former G.D.R.: Of the 8 to 12 million nudists in Germany, the majority live in the east and are over 50 years old. One regularly observes men and women of all backgrounds — from dull public servants to service workers to members of the German intelligentsia — relaxing and socializing without any clothes. They read alone in the park or chat in groups at the beach; some prepare to swim, while others wash down bites of bratwurst with pilsner.

They consider themselves members of an informal movement known as FKK, an abbreviation of Freikörperkultur, which translates to Free Body Culture. Despite the aggressive-sounding name, there is nothing confrontational or self-righteous or even erotic about it. Unlike in America, where public nudity typically has gay or countercultural connotations, in modern Germany it seems to have none. What began in the late 1800s as a kind of philosophy of physical health transformed, under authoritarian rule, into a mode of quasi-dissident leisure, and then later into something more temperate, a culturally ingrained but ultimately apolitical national pastime.
