The Naturist Gaze: The Renaissance Nude

Some of us were privileged to attend a private viewing of an exhibition, The Renaissance Nude organised by the J Paul Getty Museum in association with the Royal Academy of Arts. The latter housed the chosen works of Renaissance masters (and mistresses) within its Burlington House headquarters in London. But there was a difference; everyone who attended the exhibition were themselves naked. I have visited the RA in London many times over the last 35 years: but usually to attend their Summer Exhibition. This annual event has been one of the highlights of the artistic year in England now for over 250 years. The grand courtyard entrance, marble foyer and steps to the galleries are as familiar as my own home, but then step into that space without clothing then the feeling is unsettling and dreamlike. Yes, indeed, it was like that anxiety dream we all have.

Author Thomas Kren — Royal Academy of Arts 2018

My fellow Naturists drifted up the steps, past the friendly but nevertheless frozen faced security staff on our way to the main gallery. As we entered the subdued lighted rooms, the purpose of our visit began. Which was what exactly? On the surface, it must have seemed like a bit of a wheeze for the gallery. “Let’s put on a show about how nudes were portrayed in the 15th and 16th Centuries and then get a bunch of 21st Century nude people to look at the art works.” And for the Naturists themselves? Well, any opportunity to get naked and promote naturism as a reasonable and mainstream activity is always welcomed. But then we have the obvious problem: what connection is there really between the two? It might just as well have been an exhibition of steam engines. We might all have been dressed as Firemen.

People do love to take off their clothes, with nudism and naturism definitely alive and well.
Sign up Another wonderful World Snooker Championships in Sheffield where the city centre takes on a buzz and excitement rarely felt at any other time.

Some years ago you could barely, (no pun intended) watch a sporting event without seeing a streaker and the Crucible was no exception. Where have they all gone? One of the most prolific streakers of all time Mark Roberts made two appearances at the World Snooker Finals at the Crucible, once at the Graham Dott and Ronnie O’Sullivan game in 2004, and again in 2008 when Ali Carter played Ronnie. After a few good years of notoriety, during which he was banned from every football ground in the UK, he hung up his boots which were often the only things he wore!

People attending Nudestock go for a walk.

Streakers apart, people do love to take off their clothes, with nudism and naturism definitely alive and well. And it can be closer than you think! A farm in Doncaster is holding the annual ‘Nudestock’ event in May which is certified by the British Camping and Caravanning Club. However, the week-long event is well managed, doesn’t hurt anyone or cause any trouble with local people, and really if that’s what floats your boat! The theme this year is ‘Space’ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lunar Landing, although I seem to remember the astronauts wearing quite a lot on the way of protective clothing, which would have been quite useful given that one of the sporting activities is darts! Ouch! It is a chance for naturists to socialise with other like-minded people and is a real family affair. Other activities include yoga, body painting and Scottish dancing and there is live entertainment.

Nudity in the sport of ancient Greece

In ancient times, even before the classical era, for example, during the Cretan Minoan civilization, athletic exercise was an important part of everyday life. In fact, the Greeks credited several mythological figures with athletic achievements, and the male gods (especially Apollo and Heracles , sponsors of the sport) were commonly represented as athletes. While Greek sculpture often showed men completely naked, a new concept appeared for women, "venus pudica" (or partially nude), see " Nike of Samothrace ". Nudity in sports was very common, with almost all sports performed naked. As a tradition it was probably introduced for the first time in the city-state of Sparta, during the late archaic period.

The civilization of ancient Greece (Hellas), during the archaic period, had an athletic and cultic aesthetic of nudity that typically included adult men and adolescents, but sometimes also children, women and girls. The love for beauty also included the human body, beyond love for nature, philosophy, the arts, etc. The Greek word gym means " a place to train naked ." Male athletes competed naked, but most of the city-states of the time did not allow female participants or even spectators at those events, with Sparta being a notable exception. The origins of nudity in ancient Greek sports are the subject of a legend about the athlete Orsipo de Megara . There are several myths regarding these origins; in one, Orsipo loses his clothes during the race for the stadium of the XV Olympic Games in 720 BC, which gives him an advantage and wins. Other athletes emulate it and fashion is born.

Naked in the city
Naked in public, supposedly can be seen as an act of madness, free, a disdain of decency.

But for the lenses of artists like Spencer Tunick , Pablo Saborido and Erica Simone (in the photograph above), however, the attitude gains new meanings: stripping naked in the urban space can also be a way to strip the urban space itself. The king paraded in his carriage, showing the population his new and magnificent visible clothing, according to the supposed tailors who produced it, only for the most intelligent people. And all those who attended the stop, elegant as they were, made a point of praising the fabric, the cut, the colors of the clothing of the clothes except a child who, noticing the obvious and screaming , the king is naked! He made the people understand what he was actually seeing: a naked king.

For different reasons - social, political, cultural, economic - the distinction between what is public and what is private becomes increasingly complicated. Few people know, today, what belongs to each other's terrain. At the same time cause, consequence and "solution" of urban conflicts, the construction of closed shopping centers and condominiums, for example, ended up transforming the city into a place full of walls and surveillance cameras and empty of encounters and visibility. We are so locked in ourselves that others or the other are somewhat invisible in our day to day. And it is precisely the meeting or the direct contact, without any barrier between men and women of the city that the American Spencer Tunick promotes by registering crowds of naked people in various parts of the world.

Spencer Tunick in Valencia – April 2019
I have taken part in Spencer Tunick’s art installations before & I love both the experience & the resulting art, so when I heard he was coming to Valencia I didn’t hesitate to book some cheap Ryanair flights direct from my home in Ireland.

Through previous installations and the Spencer Valencia dedicated Facebook page I met with some friends old & new including two other friends from Ireland for a meal the night before. There was a real international flavor to our group with people from Russia, Norway, the Netherlands, the UK, Brazil & Ireland all having a good time with no politics at all. There was much speculation about what Spencer had planned and several of us had spotted a few cherry pickers (raised platforms) around the city but as usual none of us really knew what Spencer had planned. The morning of the installation we met in Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània Carrer Museu, a museum in the centre of Valencia at 5 am. We gathered outside and the air of anticipation was palpable and even for people like me who’d taken part before it was hard to resist being swept up in the buzz. There was much nervous chatter and introductions, I got chatting to a Spanish girl who was alone so I introduced her to my friends so she felt part of a group.

Finally the door opened to the museum & we were filtered through a small entrance way where we had to hand in our model release forms before proceeding into a large courtyard with a walkway around it; here the men & women were separated with the men being brought into a second separate courtyard with a similar walkway around, there was more waiting and nervous chatter. After a relatively short wait Spencer came in and with the help of a male & female model Spencer demonstrated the poses he wanted us to do during the various installations he had in mind.

What’s it like to go to a family nude swimming session?
“At my first event, I slung a towel over my shoulder and went down for breakfast – naked.”

Events organiser Pamela Fraser, 27, went to her first naturism event 14 months ago. She’s been to 20 since.

Spa days, archery, yoga, cider-tasting and even a Fawlty Towers-themed night with actors playing Basil, Sybil and Manuel – all without an item of clothing in sight.

She describes the first time she got naked at a large gathering as a “non-event’, adding “you soon realise people aren’t interested in what you look like.”

On Saturday, she’ll join around 300 others of all ages, paying up to £21 for a skinny dip at Blackpool’s Sandcastle Water Park.

“It’s no different to going swimming with your costume on,” Pamela believes. “A lot of female costumes don’t hide much anyway.”

Pamela Fraser says she has "never been worried about what I look like"

So why take your clothes off?

“The whole idea is you’re stepping back from the stress of life and the feeling that you have to fit into a certain mould.”

“You wouldn’t take your work clothes with you when you go on holiday and when you go home you probably get changed.

“Sometimes I get in from work and take all my clothes off – that’s me saying this is now my free time.”

Pamela is one of 9,000 people who pay about £44 a year to be members of the British Naturism (BN) organisation. Continued…Read full original article…

Petition launched against nude family swim at Blackpool’s Sandcastle – this is what naturists have to say about it
Campaigners say allowing children at the event ‘is a massive safeguarding issue’

A nude family swim session at Blackpool’s Sandcastle Waterpark has attracted a backlash from campaigners who say children should not be allowed at the event.

We revealed how the skinny dipping event is taking place this weekend and open to adults and kids of all ages.

Organised by British Naturism, visitors will be ditching their costumes and trunks to ride the water slides and wave machines in nothing but their birthday suits.

It’s the group’s tenth year at the Sandcastle, where they’re expecting around 300 visitors this Saturday evening, but not everyone is happy with the event.

An online petition has been launched by Emma Hadaway, from Crewe, who says: “I truly believe this is a massive safeguarding issue, children being naked around adults neither their parents or themselves know.”

She adds: “It may be a private event but children should be protected no matter what and should not be allowed at such events. The solution to this would be either to make it an 18s and over only event or to not allow the event to happen full stop.

“I have absolutely nothing against naturists and their lifestyle choice except when it comes to the safety of children.” Continued…Read full original article…

Indeed it seems nudity is having something of a moment, with British Naturism, the UK’s official organisation, noting a sudden increase in membership for the first time in 15 years. With 8,900 members – up from 8,300 last year – we appear to be edging towards the ‘nude not crude’ way of thinking.

‘SpongeBob NoPants’ and body paint: Halloween offers Seattle-area nudists chance to celebrate amid fading popularity
Can’t decide what to wear for Halloween? Forego the clothes and just bare it all.

For nudist clubs in the Puget Sound region, Halloween marks the end of an active summer season. From painting their bodies to adding masks or capes, nudists try to incorporate humor and creativity into their costumes.

“I was a treasure troll last year, so I wore a red wig and had a blinky thing in my belly button,” said Dawnzella Gearhart, 56, a member and spokeswoman for the Tiger Mountain Family Nudist Park in Issaquah. “One year, I was Miss Piggy and all I had on was a blonde wig, feather boa, high heels, tail and a snout.”

Puget Sound nudists are holding their celebrations this year amid declining membership in nudist clubs nationally, according to the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). Fewer people have been joining the clubs over the past decade because nudism is mainly popular with generations that are aging and has failed to gain traction with millennials, according to AANR spokeswoman Mary Kolassa. The group serves about 30,000 members in the U.S. at 180 affiliated clubs and resorts.

Tiger Mountain, formally known as Fraternity Snoqualmie, first opened in 1945. Gearhart said the park has around 250 members, but was home to as many as 500 in the early 2000s. Club membership was especially hard hit following the 2008 recession, when people cut non-essential spending, she said. Continued…Read full original article…

How often do you get the chance to be naked in an Art Gallery ??

Seeing the Naked Truth nude tour advertised I thought ‘how often do you get the chance to be naked in an art gallery”. Arriving at the Crawford 20 minutes early I meet Leticia. I knew she was with the nude group as I saw her Irish Naturist Association hat on. I introduced myself and she made me feel welcome. Seeing my name on her list made me realise I was really doing this. Thinking I needed a rum and coke I went into Cashmans pub next to the Crawford Art Gallery. I got back to the gallery when all the textiles were leaving. (I got the lingo now). I must have walked with confidence as the door man gave me a nod and said ‘you must be with the group’. I felt proud nodding back saying that I was.

I have never got naked in public before never mind in an art gallery with a hundred other strangers. Everyone was chit chatting. We were brought up stairs to wait where I walked from painting to painting trying to figure out was there anyone else on their own. We were brought into a beautiful room which I think was the library. I sat on a seat. This man sat next to me and we started chatting , he was on his own too. Then another women sat next to him. I asked her was she on her own. She was, so the three of us kept each other company. I told them it was my first time doing something like this. A man spoke about a charity close to his heart which I think was a cancer charity called ‘bare to care’. When he finished talking I glanced around and saw some people were naked already. I took my shoes and socks off while still chatting to the man and women. The three of us agreed it was time to undress too. Trousers next, then knickers, then the long top and the last was the bra undone. I stood there naked and said, “well that’s it, it’s my first time”. Another man walked past and shook my hand for my bravery and said “well done”. Continued…Read full original article…

Wellington naturists bare all for National Nude Gardening Day

Despite some nippy weather, members of a Wellington naturist club have taken part in New Zealand’s first ever National Nude Gardening Day.

The Naturist Federation celebrated 60 years of baring all this year, and now boasts 1600 members.

O’Naturel: the first naked restaurant in Paris

During our last days in Canada, the clear blue sky started to look more like a pattern of fifty shades of grey (pun intended). When eventually there were more days when we preferred a good jacket over our naked skin, we knew it was time to go. The Canadians tried to convince us that an Indian summer, when temperatures would rise again, would definitely be coming, our minds were already made up. We had something else to look forward to, we were planning to experience the end of the European season at a place which is still considered the mecca of naturism: The south of France.

It may seem like a big leap to move all the way from Canada to France just for a couple of weeks of sunshine, but for us it would also be a possibility to make a short stop in Belgium afterwards to visit our friends and family who we haven’t seen for more than a year by now. And to be honest… How can we keep telling people that we’re a genuine naturist travel blog when we haven’t written anything about France yet?

The ecological damage we’re making by crossing another ocean by airplane aside, the flight from Canada to France is not as long as one would imagine. We’ve left Montreal around midnight and seven hours later we already touched ground in Paris. Little sleep on the plane (as budget minded bloggers we always prefer price over comfort) and a six hour time difference are the perfect ingredients for a decent jetlag and the smartest thing we could have done was probably take a 15 hour nap. But hey, this is Paris! One of the world’s most magnificent cities! How could we be sleeping when we might as well… eat? Continued…Read full original article…

British Naturism reported this week its representatives had swelled by nearly 10 per cent this year, with the increase partly credited to a shift in approach away from behind-closed-doors functions to public outings including trips to restaurants, theatres and galleries.

Naked yoga and running classes was also said to have helped encourage newcomers to the movement as well as outdoor festivals such as Nudefest and Nudestock. Continued…Read full original article…

Reading Naturist Group say they have been defeated by the ‘uncaring’ management of Reading Borough Council
SWIMMERS have decided to call time on their weekly gatherings after four decades due to financial constraints.

Members of Reading Naturist Group (RNG) say they have been defeated by the ‘uncaring’ management of Reading Borough Council (RBC).

The group previously gathered at Arthur Hill Pool before the 105-year-old facility was closed in October 2016.

Meetings were moved to The Meadway Sports Centre in Tilehurst, but a hike in prices has seen a decline in the number of members.

Mark Young, a member of RNG, said: “The naturist swim would almost certainly have remained significantly better attended at The Meadway if the council had not disrupted the dynamic of the existing group by refusing to offer a swimming session on Thursday evening, the day the swim previously took place at Arthur Hill and instead insisting on the swim moving to Friday evening.

“This is even though many of the council’s own public swimming sessions in the late evening at The Meadway seemed to have a lower attendance still than the swimming session run by RNG.”

The last meeting of RNG was held on October 5 after members were originally due to meet three weeks previously. Continued…Read full original article…

Jensen, who owns the nearby Brujul Nude Retreat, is a regular player at Humpty Doo, and realized that the relatively quiet setting would allow him to make a public course go fully-privates.

That required bending of the club’s relatively traditional dress code, which reads: “Members and visitors are required to maintain a standard of dress considered to be in keeping with both style and neatness according to the character and standing of the Club. Neat and tidy attire at all times.” Continued…Read full original article…

Bare Market: More than 300 naturalists to go nude to Howe Caverns

Summertime is prime time for a visit to Howe Caverns, the hot-weather destination in Schoharie County that has lured thousands to partake in atmospheric spelunking 15 stories underground. From impressive rock formations to other geological wonders, Howe Caverns rates as a must-see.

On Saturday, July 14, however, there will be much more to see than stalactites and stalagmites. In celebration of International Nude Day, Howe Caverns will host “Naked in a Cave,” extending an offer to nudists to spend an evening engaged in au naturel activities. Even Sarah Danser, a survivalist star of the Discovery Channel’s cultish reality series Naked and Afraid, heard about Howe’s special occasion and will travel from Honolulu to the Cobleskill area to get in on the action.

It wasn’t hard to rouse attention for this unique event. Howe general manager April Islip simply posted the news on the venue’s Facebook page at the end of April, and she’s been fielding inquiries ever since. Islip said “Naked in a Cave” is a response to requests from nudist groups for years about holding such an event amid Howe’s natural surroundings.

So how far away are people traveling for this night? “We have a couple flying in from Chicago and a couple from the Washington, D.C., area,” Islip said, “and we have a big party coming from Virginia.”

Regarding the nudist enclaves that are closer to home, Islip noted, “We have a lot from the Massachusetts-Berkshires area, there are quite a few from Troy, and a lot from Rochester are coming.” The event is “close to a sellout,” Islip said at press time, with a maximum head count of 350. If there is any time to consider going nude in public, it’s during the sweltering Phoenix summer.

Hosted by the American Association for Nude Recreation and the Naturist Society, the week brings awareness to nude recreation and is celebrated at more than 200 clubs across the U.S. and Canada.

“It’s an informational week and chance to get out there and enjoy nudism as a form of wholesome, family recreation,” said Danielle Smith, who handles public relations for the resort. “We encourage people to come out and have fun, and see what it’s all about and get rid of the stigma.”

Smith encourages anyone new to nude recreation to call the resort and ask questions, or just come out and the $26 daily rate is waived for first-timers. Guests just need to bring a towel in order to sit on surfaces at the resort. Continued…Read full original article…

Bodmin Moor
Bodmin Moor The Cornwall Guide

Bodmin Moor is now a sparsely populated wilderness, but it was once a hub of civilisation. The moors are peppered with the remains of Bronze Age life, from stone circles, to burial mounds.

But while some of the signs of a successful Bronze Age population are obvious, many of the most important clues can only be recovered through careful, archaeological excavation.

Where did people live? What did they eat? What was life really like for them? And most importantly, how do archaeologists find the answers?

A Bronze Age village has been recently discovered at West Northwood Farm, on the southern slopes of Bodmin Moor, near St Neot.

With distant views to the sea, the settlement contains at least 7 roundhouses. This year, DigVentures is leading an excavation along with St Neot Local Historians. Together, our aim is to recover traces of life from two of the round houses.

Never done archaeology before? Great! Tried it before and want to do it again? Brilliant!

Register to join the dig, and you’ll get to learn hands-on about archaeology, and help unearth the secrets of Bronze Age life, while taking part in a real excavation…

You can join the dig for a day, a weekend, the full two weeks, or any number of days in between

Everyone who takes part in the excavation will get to:

  • Dig alongside our friendly team of archaeologists
  • Learn hands-on how archaeological discoveries are made
  • Record any discoveries you make using our online app
  • Learn how to do archaeological drawings
  • Make a real contribution to our understanding of Bronze Age life in Cornwall!

Always wanted to try archaeology? This is your chance!

North East Skinny Dip – England 2017

I am very late writing this but last year, on the 22/23rd September 2017, I, along with 400+ people did the annual North East Skinny Dip at Druridge Bay, England. Men and women of all ages and different shapes and sizes stripped off their clothes and ran into the freezing cold North Sea to raise money to the mental health charity, MIND and to celebrate the autumn equinox.

This was my second time taking part in the NESD, as I had done this dip in 2015. When I did the first dip, it was my first time stripping off and running naked into the sea with hundreds of people that I didn’t know. At the beginning of the event, I was so nervous about the occasion and if people would look at my body but once I got into the sea, it was fine and I found it exhilarating. It was an experience that I would never forget and something that I would have to do again in the future and maybe considering doing naturism.

Fast forward 2 years later, I am back in the campsite at Druridge Bay on the Saturday evening wearing my Irish hat and necklace, being greeted by new and familiar faces and arrive to a massive, roaring fire and people playing guitars, singing along, having a drink or two and a dance and enjoying the warm up to the event. I met numerous people from different parts of the country who arrived for the first time telling me how they heard about the event, why they wanted to do it, etc. It was very interesting hearing some of the stories that they told and how they’ve overcome adversities in their life and want to have a new experience. I felt very sympathetic hearing their stories and although they were very nervous as first timers, I was able to share my experience of the event and told them that “once you do it, you will be back here again.” Continued…Read full original article…

Dark Mofo nude swimmers take the plunge for annual winter solstice dip
A record number of naked backsides have galloped down a Hobart beach into the water for the annual mad dash of Dark Mofo’s winter solstice nude swim.

With the air temperature hovering around 7 degrees Celsius, a record number of participants arrived in the dark to don red swimming caps supplied by organisers and steel themselves for the event, held annually as part of the Museum of Old and New Art’s (MONA) festival of the bizarre.

They are off and heading to the water for the 2018 Dark Mofo nude swim in Hobart.

The stampede began at 7:42am, with waves of bodies throwing off the towels and heading towards the River Derwent, where a relatively tropical water temperature of around 14C awaited.

In 2017, just over 1,000 people registered for the event, catching out organisers who had factored in a number of no-shows — resulting in too many bums and not enough towels.

This year more than 2,200 signed up, with Dark Mofo learning the lesson of 2017, with plenty of linen on hand this morning at Long Beach, in Sandy Bay. Continued…Read full original article…

Loch Lomond nudist colony to open their doors to the public for the first time
It will be a rare opportunity to discover the naked truth about Scotland’s only nudist colony.

For the first time, visitors will be welcomed by naturist islanders in Loch Lomond on Doors Open Day when famous and historic buildings reveal their secrets.

The Scottish Outdoor Club, based on the loch’s Inchmurrin Island is celebrating its 80th anniversary and is offering curious members of the public an opportunity to look around the 11-acre site in an attempt to attract new members.

Teena Gould, the social convener of the club, said the organisation was delighted to be included in the event after being approved last week.

She said: “We are over the moon that a few ramshackle huts in Loch Lomond has joined an illustrious list of cathedrals and city halls that will be open to the public for free.

“At first it was a bit of a pipe dream but when I started to look at the criteria, I was convinced we were suited.

“We ticked the boxes on cultural significance, the fact we were not usually accessible to the public and that it would be free during the event.” Continued…Read full original article…

Naturists are invited to a giant picnic in Paris

If you’re a fan of shedding your clothes, you may be interested to learn that a giant picnic will be held in a public park in Paris to celebrate the inaugural Journée Parisienne du Naturisme (Parisian Day of Naturism). The event will take place on 24 June at the naturist area of the Bois de Vincennes, east of the French capital.

The event is being run by the ANP L’Association des Naturistes de Paris and the plan is that it will be held in future on the last Sunday of June annually. This year, a yoga class will be held at 11.30am followed by the picnic, and the event itself runs from 10am to 6pm. The naturist area at the park opened for two months in 2017, and has re-opened for six months this year, forming part of the city’s “open-minded vision for the use of Parisian public spaces.” The zone is open between 8am and 7.30pm near the park’s bird reserve until October. Birthday suit buffs will gather on a beach near Brittas to attack the rubbish issue

It comes as the Irish Naturists Association prepares to celebrate Ireland’s first ever flesh-friendly dip site.

Earlier this year, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council agreed to erect public notices at Hawk Cliff in Dalkey, south Co Dublin, warning others about bare-cheeked bathers.

We revealed the move followed law changes which mean naked swimmers are doing nothing illegal. And ahead of the official unveiling of the signs, naturists want to attack the rubbish issue. Continued…Read full original article…

Continued…Read full original article…
