Torquay’s famous Cockington Fayre, due to be held on Wednesday August 2, has been cancelled due to bad weather. It is the first time the event, which was expected to raise up to £10,000 for the village’s St Matthew’s Church, has been called off in more than a decade.

Organiser Ron Ashcroft said he and his team had been left with no option but to call off the event. He said: “Unfortunately due to the heavy rain recently and the expected heavy rain due on Wednesday we have reluctantly had to cancel the Fayre on safety grounds.”
